University of Sussex Low-Code Workshop

Yesterday, after much planning, we finally held our low-code workshop at the University of Sussex!

With the support of Kingsley Sage, Computer Sciences lecturer, and Inês Barros, Education Programme Lead at OutSystems, we had the OutSystems development platform installed on the University’s computers and provided the University with a full license so students can continue to learn and develop freely.

The format for the workshop was simple, but effective - to help students through the OutSystems Mobile Guided Path. Anyone can download the OutSystems development platform, sign up for a free environment and start their journey at home, but it’s easier to do it with a guiding hand and, on this day, the students had two.

Our senior developer Evgeni and placement-year student Matas spent the day in Lab 1 taking the students through the guided path to becoming a mobile developer, explaining each step one by one and going through the room to answer questions and give more insight on the capabilities of the platform.

The students tackled the task with interest and enthusiasm, keeping our developers busy with questions and curiosities. They also took home all the goodies provided by us and OutSystems - the Neo toys, in particular, were an unexpected hit, and we hope the little guys found good homes where they will continue to inspire aspiring developers.

All in all, the event was a success and we are incredibly grateful for all the help we received from Kingsley Sage, his colleagues at the University of Sussex, Inês Barros and the OutSystems team. We firmly believe in this platform and the wonders of low-code, we love working with it and we love how it helps us deliver amazing products much faster than traditional hand-coding - so it’s only fair that we share the love by bringing aspiring developers into the fold.

We are committed to our mission and our product, but we are also committed to our communities and the flourishing of a new generation of developers. We want them to know what’s out there, to be fully aware of the possibilities of the industry they choose to be a part of, to be up-to-date with the latest cutting-edge technologies in their field.

Thank you to everyone involved in this amazing opportunity, especially the students who attended and got to get their hands dirty developing mobile applications on the OutSystems platform! We are now looking forward to the next educational event, which will be happening very soon!

If you’re a student, you want to work on software development and would like to learn about OutSystems, get in touch with us! We’d love to work with your University to bring low-code into the curriculum.
